My dear,

Pretend to be brave and what do you know, your legs gain enough confidence to stand strong. Pretend to be smart and what do you know, your brain starts looking for ways to learn more. Pretend to be kind and what do you know, enough time has passed without you doing wrong that you become technically kind. And pretend to be uncaring, like so many of us do, and in the end you’ll realize that pretending to be heartless after a while actually makes you heartless.

We are what we pretend to be, so we must be careful about what we pretend to be.

Let’s pretend to be better than we are right now, who knows, we might just be.

Falsely yours,
Kurt Vonnegut, Jr.
