My dear,

If you’re not careful, the newspapers will have you hating the people who are being oppressed, and loving the people who are doing the oppressing.

They’ll have you believing that you are just like them, that you are not being oppressed when if fact you are, that they earned their wealth honestly, that they view the world the same way you do, and that you too should attain to become them.

They’ll have you blaming your situations all on yourself, have you kneeling before them, and have you smiling the whole way.

We no longer have schackles on our feet and on our hands, but we have them on our minds. We still hate our skin color, still sit in the back of the bus by choice, still unnaturally straighten our hair, and still love skin of the lighter variety.

If you are not careful, the newspapers will have you hating yourself.

Falsely yours,
Malcolm X
