My dear,

When you’re young you don’t worry about it. Nothing can hold you back. You’re so impeccably strong and energetic that it doesn’t even cross your mind – the weight of your possessions.

You buy shoes, clothes, cars, pets, and houses. You don’t notice the weight of it all building it. Until… Until you find yourself making travel decisions on whether or not you can find a babysitter for your dogs. Until you find yourself not able to travel because you have that car lease and house mortgage to pay first. Until you find yourself getting a bigger and more expensive house which you don’t necessarily need just because your shoes and clothes are overtaking your old house and you need more room.

You don’t notice the weight of it all until it nearly breaks your back. And after that, it’s all you can think about.

The things you own end up owning you.

The posessions you have right now, look at them, each of those is a small weight upon your back, and they accumulate – are you willing to carry them?

Falsely yours,
Charles Michael “Chuck” Palahniuk
