My dear,
As we get older, the world become more and more addictive. The problem is that this addictiveness won’t differentiate between what we want to be addicted to and what we don’t want to be addicted to. Therefore, if we want to get any work done, we’ll have to constantly be on guard against everything; we must suspect everything. For, as I said everything will be addictive (it might already be). We’ll just have to choose between what we deem necessary/appropriate to be addicted to, and what we don’t.
We’ll increasingly be defined by what we say no to.
Falsely yours,
Paul Graham
