Civilization is the progress toward a society of privacy. The savage’s whole existence is public, ruled by the laws of his tribe.

Civilization is the process of setting man free from men.

Once man no longer needs to act for other men to prove his sanity, once man is ruled only by his own rules, and once man is able to have privacy – true privacy (even in public), civilization shall be that much closer.
